Chelle, I know that celiac and diabetes are related, both autoimmune diseases. Kilian has been tested for the celiac antibody, but is negative so far. Have they tested Reignah?

Poor Beckah, I know how difficult celiac disease is. Hope she's adjusted to the new diet restriction (you too!). It is a lot of planning I know. Glad you have an answer and are able to keep her healthy and feeling good!

Kilian loves the flexibility of his pump....way, way better than the injections. He forgets he has it on most of the time. I love that it gives in such tiny increments of insulin so that we don't have to "round up or down" to the nearest unit. This helps in keeping his tight numbers. Much less packing for us too when we head out for the day or if he spends the night someplace else.

I know that fats in foods plays a big role in diabetes in the sense that fattier foods are absorbed slower...thus Reignah's sudden drops may be due to fatty carbs that may take several hours to absorb and the insulin working much more rapidly with no carbs to counteract yet. With the pump, you can do a setting so that half the insulin is given at meal time and the other half given two hours later. That has helped alot so he doesn't get the highs and lows.

I know everything seems to be changing now with each growth spurt. So many factors go into blood sugars. It's mind-boggling trying to keep up. Thankfully, he is still in honeymoon phase so his pancreas is still functioning a small bit. His numbers have been quite low with about 25 total units a day. I know that will go up dramatically once his pancreas shuts down totally.

Regarding the pump, I would look into it as soon as they give her the ok. I know of a little girl who is 2 and has been on it for almost a year. It works wonderfully for her. With a little velcro pocket around her belly, she barely knows the pump is there. It has made our life so much easier too.

Please keep me posted how Reignah is doing, I'll be praying for your family as I know you have so much on your plate with all of your little ones needing you! Let me know if you have any more questions. I've tried to educate myself about diabetes every chance I get.

Hi Mary,

Reignah is Type 1 Diabetic. She is on insulin now and also is very unpredictable with her blood sugars. We are having issues right now with how fast her blood drops after insulin is given. We have seen it over 500 and given her a dose of insulin and she then crashes where we have to give her a shot of Glucagon to get her above 50. Sometimes she is over 300 and will not budge after a few units of fast acting insulin. they have not considered her for the pump as of yet.

I am learning a lot about fats and how they work with our kids blood sugars and I have seen quite a difference. But recently Reignah has had some unexplained issues with her Pancreas and Stomach we are seeing a specialist about.

How are you and your son doing?
Do you find the pump to be working well with your son and does he seem to like it better than insulin by injection and testing all the time?

My son was diagnosed Type 1 in November. He is 10 and now on an insulin pump. I am guessing Reignah has Type 2, which can be controlled without constant insulin, but would love to chat about what you were able to find out with regard to a different approach to treating her. Hope she's doing well!

Out of curiousity, are you seeing the comments I left? Also, I don't see comments from anyone else. Are they here and I just can't see them or am I the only one commenting?
